Born and raised in Singapore, Kai always loved fast food, loud drums, and poker. His mom, on the other hand, did not share his appreciation for any of those things.
Meanwhile, some 3,000 miles away in Seoul, South Korea, Miri grew up a chatty and precocious young lady with her first love Ddol Ddol, a miniature pinscher and local thug.
As fate would have it, the two moved to Americaland the same year to pursue graduate degrees—Michigan and business school for her, Los Angeles and short fiction writing for him.
Despite being in the Bay Area for seven years after school, the two never met until Miri moved into the apartment directly above Kai's at 246 Ritch, a tiny complex in the heart of Soma with thin walls and modern trappings.
One evening, under the pretense of showing his new neighbor how his studio was laid out, Kai had Miri over for takeout soul food from Brenda's and a bottle of cheap red—a meal that quickly turned into a first date.
Whether it was scouring the aisles of Whole Foods for deals or flitting from one stage to the next at Coachella, the two became inseparable. She was a compulsive planner and he was... not but somehow, it all worked out.
Later that year, surrounded by desert flora and things that will eat you in Pilanesberg, South Africa, Kai took a knee and asked Miri to marry him. She responded with an empathic yah!, which she chalked up to utter surprise. In the distance, two lions roared.
The plan was to do a destination wedding in Bali, but the world had other ideas. Four cancelled trips later, the two decided to do the Britney thing and eloped in Vegas, where they were finally wed in the desert landscape of Red Rock Canyon.
As the global pandemic raged on, Miri's social media feed started serving up more and more baby (both human and puppy) content which they took to be a sign. After months of trying, they finally heard a tiny heartbeat in November!
Other than extreme fatigue, heartburn, sleep deprivation, nausea, rhinitis, and cramps indicative of a healthy and growing potato, Miri is doing just fine. The couple now reside in Nashville, and are looking forward to thrilling and sleepless days ahead!
